A Harvest Leader is a specially-trained volunteer who goes the extra mile to help get fruit from tree to charity! Harvest Leaders help contribute to food security and make a difference in the community. This position is the backbone of the Fruit Tree Project and without Harvest Leaders, we couldn't run it. With each pick, we help divert fresh fruit from going to waste and reallocating the harvest to those in need.
How does it work?
-You receive emails from the coordinator with details for the upcoming fruit picks in need of a Harvest Leader. Simply reply when you can lead a pick so that it suits your schedule.
Each fruit harvest involves:
-Picking up equipment
-Greeting volunteers and leading a safe and fun pick
-Delivering the fruit to predetermined agencies (daytime picks only) *NOTE: if you are unable to deliver, we can make other arrangements
-Bringing the equipment (and fruit if it is an evening or weekend pick) back to storage space
-Filling out a short post-pick report. Easy!
What is expected?
-Lead 1-2 picks weekly or bi-weekly (approx. 2-4 hours each pick) throughout the harvesting season (July-October), and you can do more if you'd like!
-Access to a vehicle (your own wheels, OGO Car co-op, etc.)
-A fun, positive attitude to help support the project in it's mission!
What do you get?
-A steady supply of fruit and your chance to pick throughout the season (cherries, apricots, plums, apples, nuts)
-Volunteer opportunities scheduled according to your availability
-A chance to build community, meet new people, and help the environment
-Valuable work experience and develop leadership skills and other work-related skills (time-management, multi-tasking, coordination, teamwork, engaging and building confidence in volunteers, organization, and communication). We are happy to provide reference letters for employment, volunteer hours, etc.
New to picking fruit? No problem! A training session will be scheduled once you sign up.
